Every medical office needs a medical assistant to carry out the important administrative and clerical tasks that are required for operations to run smoothly. Although hospitals are clearly the most obvious place of employment for medical assistants, they can also be hired in private practices, medical transcription agencies, nursing agencies, government and non-profit agencies and research laboratories. However, the role of medical assistants varies greatly from that of the physician assistants since the former is not involved in the diagnosis and treatment of any patients.

While it is easy to misconstrue the role of the medical assistant with that of a secretary, the difference is that medical assistants can be involved in highly specialized roles that are specific to the medical field where they are working. They may also be involved in the purchasing and ordering of medical equipment, the preparation of materials to be used by physicians in medical procedures and operations and the record keeping of the patients and cases that the doctor handles. Medical assisting usually involves working forty hour work weeks but some medical institutions may require you to work at night and on weekends.

For anyone who wants to become a professional medical assistant, you need to undergo a medical assisting program and apply for certification. A medical assisting program can last anywhere from a year to two years. Since some educational institutions offer classes for medical assistance in the evening, this is an excellent option for those who want to undergo a career shift. When you take a medical assisting program, you will be taught classes in anatomy and medical terminology aside from accounting and insurance processing. Although volunteer and field work may help you land a job as a medical assistant, nothing compares to receiving the actual training that will help you obtain certification.
