Medical transcription is the process of converting medical voice-recorded material into text. These transcripts are typically used as part of the patient’s medical record. Physicians use a voice recorder, such as a cassette player, to document the report. You may then retrieve the report, usually via the Internet, either in audio or digital form. Using special electronic equipment, typically using recorders with foot pedals, you are now able to transcribe it into a document. Medical transcriptionists have the option of working at an office or doing home-based transcription.

A working knowledge of medical terminology, above-average typing skills, excellent grammar, a good ear for listening, and the ability to use transcribing equipment are necessary requirements in the medical transcription business. Thus, although it is not actually a prerequisite, most people aiming to become medical transcriptionists opt to take medical transcription classes or some other form of training.

These medical transcription courses offer medical terminology classes and computer training. After you have finished the course, you are given a certificate or a diploma.

Medical transcription classes can be acquired via traditional schooling or distance education. Traditional courses are typically held in universities and community colleges; meanwhile, distance education is usually held online, which you can attend at your convenience. There are also blended medical transcription classes, wherein traditional and online learning approaches are combined. Other modes of education include apprenticeship or on-the-job-training in a hospital or a health care provider’s office.

When choosing a medical transcription course, always check if the offering organization and the program itself are accredited. This ensures that the course has been reviewed and complied with the education department’s standards.

Following medical transcription education, you may then opt to undergo certification or registration. This requires you to undergo an examination given by a major association.

Finally, you can now confidently start working as a medical transcriptionist!
