Gender selection, or choosing what sex you want your child to have, remains controversial. Pro-gender selection groups have noted advantages, such as smaller family size and children who feel that they are wanted. However, a number of ethical concerns have also been brought up, such as sexual discrimination and a resultant inequality of the ratio of males to females.

There are two general methods of gender selection: natural and medical.

Natural gender selection methods are techniques you can do at home that allegedly help you to conceive a child of a sex you want. Natural gender selection typically poses fewer ethical problems than medical gender selection; however, natural methods are also less effective than medical means. Majority of these methods have not been proven scientifically.

Natural gender selection methods may be divided into four groups, namely timing methods, dietary and food supplement methods, ancient Chinese methods, and gender venders.

Timing methods propose that the sex of your child is determined by the timing of intercourse with regards to ovulation. These methods usually require accurate ovulation tracking.

One method emphasizes the difference between sperms carrying the X- and Y-chromosomes. Y-chromosome-carrying sperms are faster but X-chromosome-carrying sperms are more resilient; thus, in ideal conditions, such as the peak days of fertility, a Y-chromosome-carrying sperm fertilizes an egg cell first, resulting in a boy. However, in anything-less-than-ideal conditions, fertilization would result in a girl.

Another method proposes that intercourse occurring half a day after ovulation produces a girl. In this method, it is also advised that the father not ejaculate a week before intercourse, and that intercourse should only be done once during the ovulation period.

It has also been suggested that the movement of the moon, by altering the pH of your endometrium, can also affect the sex of a child.

The dietary and food supplement methods stipulate that altering your diet, which results in changes in your body’s pH and hormonal levels, makes it more likely to conceive a child with a certain sex.

The ancient Chinese method uses the mother’s age and the month of conception in determining what the gender of your child will be.

Gender Venders are kits that mix the timing and dietary methods to conceive a child with a specific sex.

In contrast to natural gender selection, medical gender selection involves the use of artificial methods in conception. These include sperm sorting, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis, among others.
