An access server enables users to access files on a local network. An access server acts as a gateway to give access to its host server and client server. The client connects to the access server, the access server then connects to its host. It then allows or disallows access to the client server based on the validity of its credentials. An access server allows any client device to connect to its files through a secure connection. Access to remote databases is obtained using an access remote server. It establishes multiple connections and provides services to all authorized connections. The user from the access remote server can view and manipulate its database.

There are authentication methods in access servers such as password protection and client server acknowledgement. Access servers generate identifications of the client servers. Internet users rely on isp servers for their internet connection. Internet service providers provide users with the necessary authentication methods to access the isp servers.

Access servers are not confined to individual machines and local file systems because they have client servers. Most operations available locally can also be performed on remote databases. These accesses are only allowed with the proper permissions and the proper identifications. Access servers may also have different levels of access for each remote user. Some client servers are only allowed to view the files while some are given more access by giving them the right to manipulate files.

Access servers may be used by office workers who are allowed by their employers to work at home. Their computers then can be given access with each other allowing the office worker who will be using the client server to submit and continue their works through these access servers. The line of communication between the host server and the client server can then be continued.
