The safety and reliability of steam or hot water supply in heating systems, such as floor heating systems in big establishments, is dependent on the efficient operation of power boilers. It is either the boiler engineer or operator who has the responsibility for operating the power boiler. Prior to undertaking the operation of a boiler system, however, you must first pass a qualifying examination.

Duties of Boiler Engineers

If you want to become a boiler engineer, your responsibilities include operating and overseeing the operation of a boiler plant, for which you need to be properly licensed. You may also be tasked to train personnel, such as other engineers and operators, who are under your supervision.

Classifications of Boiler Engineers

Boiler engineers are classified into three levels: first class, second class and third class. When you earn your first-class boiler engineer license, you'll also be referred to as a chief boiler engineer. This is the highest license available to a boiler engineer. As a first class engineer, you'll be qualified to be in charge of a boiler plant that has an unlimited steam capacity. You'll also be tasked to operate and supervise the boiler operation.

Second-class boiler engineers are allowed to operate and supervise boiler plants with a maximum of 200,000 lb/hr steam generation capacity. You must have a minimum 2-year experience being a third-class boiler engineer before you'll qualify as one of the second-class boiler engineers.

Third-class boiler engineers, on the other hand, are only permitted to operate and oversee a 100,000 lb/hr steam generation capacity of a boiler plant. To qualify for a third-class boiler engineer license, you must have a minimum 2-year experience as a boiler operator.

The qualifying examination to earn a boiler engineer license is very important. Successful completion will attest to your ability to make the critical decisions that are necessary at the plant.
