Nature of Call Voicemail

The earliest forms of call voicemail came about in the 70s when cellphones and e-mail were virtually non-existent. This call answering service eliminated the need for secretaries and other office colleagues to have to take down messages for call recipients who are unavailable at the time of the call. It was first used by corporate organizations with a private branch exchange type of phone service, in order to handle incoming calls within the network.

Instead of having to use a separate call answering machine, you simply punch a code on your phone to activate the call voicemail. The call voicemail has two main functions - call answering and voice messaging. A phone with call voicemail can automatically answer incoming calls from within or outside of the organization.

How Call Voicemail Works

To greet callers who have reaced your call voicemail, you can use a pre-recorded standard greeting or record your own personalized greeting. You can change the greeting as often as you want to suit the situation, such as to inform callers that you are away on vacation. In the greeting, you should identify yourself or your telephone number, then add a polite instruction to the caller to leave a message after a beep comes on.

You need to activate the call voicemail function on your phone by pressing a code. Once you have activated the call voicemail, your phone dial tone changes in duration or style to indicate that your call voicemail is on.

When you're not around and there's an incoming call, the caller will hear your recorded greeting. After the beep comes on, the caller can leave his message for you. The message is automatically recorded into your voicemail memory when the caller hangs up.

You will know that you have a voicemail message because the light on your apparatus will blink. You can then dial a code to hear your messages. The voicemail system also indicates how many messages have been received.

Benefits of Call Voicemail

While call voicemail may be old-fashioned compared to e-mail, chat and cellphone systems, it has its merits.

Call voicemail is an inexpensive alternative to buying a call answering machine. Many phone service providers already offer this feature as part of their packages. You don't need to worry that your voicemail might malfunction the way some answering machines do.

It is also convenient for callers who don't have any of your other contact information, such as your e-mail address or cellphone number. Best of all, you won't be disturbed by incoming calls during odd hours of the night, as your call voicemail will take care of them for you.
