Background Story of the Lonely Hearts Movie

Released only back in 2006, the Lonely Hearts movie is an adaptation of a true story of an infamous couple who swindled and murdered at least twelve women victims. The couple, better known as the Lonely Hearts Killers, committed the gruesome crimes during the late 1940s, and were tried and executed several years later.

Raymond Fernandez would locate potential victims through a lonely hearts network. His highly eloquent and passionate style of writing attracted many women who were more than convinced that he was in love with them and willing to marry them. He tagged along his partner Martha Beck, who posed as his sister. After the marriage, the couple would live with the victim first and made sure that she would bequeath her money and properties to Raymond.

The killings occur whenever the victim becomes suspicious or when she and the Lonely Hearts Killers would have an argument. The shocking part about the case was the heartless way in which the couple committed the murders, even going to the extent of drowning one victim's infant daughter.

In fact, the case was so sensational that it gave rise to a book and three movie adaptations entitle The Honeymoon Killers, Deep Crimson, and Lonely Hearts.

The Lonely Hearts Movie Adaptation

Incidentally, the director of the Lonely Hearts Movie was also the grandson of the detective who solved the crime. Part of the movie's story plot concerned the detective's personal life and struggles, especially after his wife had committed suicide.

A number of noted Hollywood stars took the roles of Raymond and Martha, as well as the two detectives and the victims.

Filming began in 2005, mostly in Florida and Louisiana. The film premiered in early 2006 in the USA, but was not publicly released until a year later.

Reviews on the Lonely Hearts Movie

While critics have lauded the acting abilities of the cast members, especially those who played the couple and the detective, many have also mentioned the profanity and gore that became the film's highlights.

The Lonely Hearts movie was also compared to previous versions, and critics have noted that this version also did not follow the details of the actual story faithfully. For instance, Martha Beck was featured in the Lonely Hearts movie as a beautiful and insane seductress rather than as an overweight bloodthirsty killer.
