Tucson is the seat of Pima County, Arizona located 118 miles (188 km) southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles (98 km) north of the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2005, Tucson ranked as the 32nd largest city and 52nd largest metropolitan area in the United States. It is the largest city in southern Arizona and the second largest in the state. Tucson is situated on an alluvial plain in the Sonoran desert, surrounded by five minor ranges of mountains: the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Tortolita Mountains to the north, the Santa Rita Mountains to the south, the Rincon Mountains to the east, and the Tucson Mountains to the west.

Tourism is a major industry in Tucson, bringing in $2 billion-a-year and over 3.5 million visitors annually due to numerous resorts, hotels, Tucson bed and breakfast, and attractions. A significant economic force is middle-class and upper-class Sonorans, who travel from Mexico to Tucson to purchase goods that are not readily available in their country, and usually stay in the many Tucson bed and breakfast inns around the area.

In addition to vacationers, a significant number of winter residents, or snowbirds, are attracted by Tucson's mild winters and contribute to the local economy. Snowbirds often purchase second homes in Tucson and nearby areas, contributing significantly to the property tax base. Other snowbirds and perpetual travelers can be seen in large numbers arriving in autumn in large RVs towing small cars while some of these travelers prefer to stay in a Tucson bed and breakfast.

Accommodations in Tucson, Arizona are very much comparable to the accommodations in its Southern State counter parts, which also provide short-stay accommodations like an Alabama bed and breakfast, Oklahoma bed and breakfast and Vermont bed and breakfast. What Tucson has to offer is its natural parks waiting to be discovered including the Catalina State Park, Colossal Cave Mountain Park and Oracle State Park. With a great number of tourists visiting Tucson, Arizona, many people keep coming back to explore more of this great Southern city.
