Cerebal palsey is not a disease, but a disorder of movement and posture without cure. If you have a child with cerebal palsey, you may want to resort to therapy to help your child learn better ways to do things. Physical therapy, behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and drug therapy can be part of the treatment plan for cerebal palsey patients.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy uses therapeutic exercises to prevent the weakening of large muscles like those in the arms and legs due to lack of use, and to avoid muscle contracture should these suffer stiffness or become fixed in unnatural positions. Physical therapists can help patients learn to walk, use orthopedic devices, move and balance themselves.

Behavioral Therapy

This therapy can complement physical therapy. It employs psychological theory and techniques to improve your child's physical and mental abilities. The behavioral therapists may give suggestions to a patient with cerebal palsey and the family on ways to improve behavior since most techniques must be done at home.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists utilize therapeutic exercises and activities to help patients with cerabal palsey to find better ways to use the smaller muscles in their bodies. Occupational therapists will teach your child how to write, brush teeth, comb hair, feed and dress without any assistance.

Speech and Language Therapy

This kind of therapy can help patients improve their communications skills which include using sign language and communication tools, and talking. If your child with cerbral palsey can talk, you can work with a speech therapist to make the speech easier to understand, or to improve listening skills.

Drug Therapy

Your physician may prescribe drugs including muscle relaxants to control tendency to spasms, and anti-seizure medications if your patient has seizures associated with cerebal paulsey. However, drugs must be used sparingly to avoid long-term side-effects.
