Dental and vision insurance schemes are essential to obtain because of the high costs involved in paying for unexpected dental treatments. Paying for prescription eyewear can also be equally exorbitant especially if contact lenses are used. Dental and vision insurance schemes are not included in standard health insurance plans. For this reason, both dental and vision insurance schemes must be obtained separately.

Two types of vision insurance plans are available for you to choose from:

A standard vision insurance scheme will cover for annual eye examinations, the purchase of lenses for glasses, eyeglass frames and contact lenses. A maximum limit applies for the purchase of eyeglass frames, lenses for eyeglasses and contact lenses.

A premium insurance vision plan provides coverage for major eye surgeries including lasik vision correction and surgery of the cornea and retina. The benefits received in a standard vision insurance plan are also included in a premium vision insurance scheme.

Dental insurance plans offer an array of different schemes for you to consider:

A direct reimbursement dental scheme is the most expensive of all plans. Direct reimbursement plans allow individuals to seek dental treatment with a dentist of the person’s choice. Dental expenses are then reimbursed based on a certain formula.

Indemnity dental plans also give you the freedom to use the dentist of your choice. You will not be authorized to obtain dentist referrals. Some plans may allow you to get an authorization from the insurance provider for certain treatments. Majority of indemnity plans also require you to pay a small deductible plus a certain percentage of the dental expenses.

The cheapest kind of dental insurance plan is known as a managed health care plan. Under this scheme patients are free to choose any dentist from an accredited list. Patients may also be required to pay a small portion of the dental bill depending on the type of coverage chosen.

Both dental and vision insurance schemes tend to be cheaper if purchased as a group insurance. Checking with your employer whether both dental and vision insurance schemes can be added as a benefit to your current health insurance.
