DUI or Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drug is also known as DWI or Driving While Intoxicated. Although such regulation is recognized in all 50 states, penalties and charges vary from state to state.

In California, Los Angeles DUI conviction carries stiff sentence and complex punishments. Such penalties are still subject for modifications if for example, a drunk driver refuses to submit to alcohol testing, has a previous drunk driving conviction or carries a child (under the age of 14) inside the vehicle.

During the first Los Angeles DUI offense, court probation may reach up to 5 years. During this period, it means no drinking and driving for the offender. Fines and fees may increase up to 1800 dollars including penalty assessments. However, in some cases the court allows the offender to work off his charges through community service. Attending Los Angeles DUI School is mandatory for charged drivers under 21 years of age. Suspension of drivers license is also regulated for those convicted with drunk driving.

Maryland DUI charges are a bit different. The blood alcohol concentration level in Maryland is lowered. Therefore, it is easier to get caught for drunk driving in this state than in Los Angeles. A minimum of 45-day suspension of driver’s license as well as fine charges and time spent in jail is sentenced for first time offenders.

If you are charged with a DUI offense, it is best to consult the legal advice of the best DUI lawyers in your town. Ask about DUI insurance and prevent the suspension of your driving privileges. There are many insurance providers who offer premiums at a very competitive rate although you may find DUI insurance rates much higher than normal insurance rates. This is because DUI insurance is just temporary. Once you’re driving record is cleared, you can go ahead and purchase a regular insurance policy.
