All companies and individuals based in California whose job is to build or alter any form of structure, highway, roads, or any other types of buildings are required by law to obtain a CA contractors license when a construction job costs more than a specified amount for its materials and labor. Any company or individual whose job is to renovate a property including those that have been subcontracted to do this type of job are required to also obtain a CA contractors license before a bid can be submitted.

A California contractor license is issued to individuals, corporations, or joint ventures; however, a limited liability company cannot obtain a CA contractors license; however, you must pass an exam in order to qualify for a California state contractor license. When a CA contractors license is awarded to you, it is valid for two years.

To obtain a California contractor license, there is a minimum age limit that must be met. You also must have a certain level of experience in managing the day-to-day operations of a construction business that would include supervisory skills in fieldwork. If you do not meet these requirements, you can work for a qualifying individual who has the abovementioned qualifications as well as a certain number of years work experience as a foreman, journeyman. The local state board will verify the work experience of the qualifying individual before issuing an applicable license.

There are some instances when some contractors do not need to be licensed to take on a project. These would include people who are not classified as independent contractors (those who do not work for a business that is independently owned), do not have direct control over the work of field people, or who do not have control over the finished results of the project. You should contact the local contractors state license board to get more details on other situations wherein a contractor license is not required.

Receiving contractor jobs without a license is a criminal act that can lead to time in jail plus a payment of a fine. Whenever a prior conviction exists, a higher fine is imposed along with a longer jail term.
