Proper methods for hazardous chemical storage must be exercised in places where chemicals are present in order to prevent explosions and fires.

All chemicals must be sorted according to hazard classes and be carefully labeled with hazard warnings to avoid mixing incompatible chemicals together.

Acids such as hydrochloric, nitric or sulphuric acid should be kept in chemical storage cabinets. Acids must not be stored with oxidizers, flammable chemicals/items or bases.

Bases such as sodium or ammonium hydroxide should be kept away from poisons and or other chemicals that are not compatible with acids. You may store these chemicals in polyethylene bottles.

Gasses such as oxygen and carbon monoxide are normally contained in metal cylinders. As a result these chemicals must be attached to a strap or chain and hug on the wall. Oxidizers should not be stored near flammable or explosive chemicals.

Solvents or flammable chemicals such as acetone benzene and calcium carbide should be stored away from poisons, acids, oxidizers and bases. These chemicals should be kept in a dry cool place, or in flammable chemical storage cabinets.

Oxidizers such as benzyl peroxide should be placed on a chemically resistant spill tray and contained in chemical storage cabinets. Oxidizers will chemically react to anything flammable or combustible.

Poisonous chemicals such as chloroform should be stored in bottles that are resistant to chemical reactions and kept in a well-ventilated and dry area.

Any chemicals that react to water or liquids should be kept away from oxidizers.

Because chemicals become dangerous when chemical reactions occur, hazardous chemicals should be kept at a minimum within the hazardous chemical storage facility. All chemical storage lids should be tightly sealed to avoid any chemical evaporation.

Hazardous chemical storage areas should be checked often for any expired of unneeded chemicals for storage.

Lastly, first aid supplied, emergency numbers and personal protective gear should be kept within the premises of the hazardous chemical storage area.
