Are you a domain name owner dissatisfied with your current domain name registrar? You might want to consider a request for domain name transfer. This process transfers your domain name from your old registrar to your new registrar. The transfer does not alter any information associated with your domain name, and will not disrupt the functions of your e-mail or website.

Domain name transfer is done by accomplishing a transfer registrar request. This is a form provided by your new registrar, to be submitted to your old registrar. Administrative approval from the losing registrar is required for the transfer to be carried out. Upon successful transfer the information in your domain name Whois will reflect these changes.

Certain information about the domain name, including the registrant or owner of the domain name, is made publicly available on your registrar’s Whois database. Various search engines, provided free by some websites, allow you to search domain names on Whois databases to check the availability of domain names.

Under the Domain Name System, or DNS, a numerical IP address is assigned to a particular domain name. A domain name is made up of two or more labels separated by dots. Because it is easier to remember than an IP address, the domain name helps humans to easily access IP addresses on the Internet.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, is the governing body for the DNS. Companies or organizations known as domain name registrars provide registration services to the public. ICANN-accredited registrars are authorized to register specific generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs). You may search the registry for the validity of your desired domain name. The terms of registration and renewal vary with each registrar's policy.

The transfer of certain domain names may require an authorization code that can be obtained from your current, or losing, registrar. The losing registrar reserves the right to reject any transfer requests based on the ICANN rules governing domain name transfer. These rules are usually found in an FAQ on your registrar’s website.
