A T1 line is a revolutionary Internet connection that picks up a speed of up to 1.544 megabits per second – enough to download that TV episode in just 10 minutes. Because such a connection speed is unbelievably fast, particular business systems are taking this service. T1 service providers usually service businesses that need connection to internet and intranet, and companies that provide e-mail, FTP and website services. To widen consumer base, residential T1 has also been introduced through voice communication.
Short for "Trunk Level 1, T-1 carrier, or T-1 line," a T1 line offers an optimum level of connectivity. It guarantees reliability and speed because T1 internet access allows transmission of data and information over multiple phone lines. In a T1 vs DSL comparison, T1 internet access takes advantage of its lack of geographical restrictions; a T1 line can be connected anywhere. However, unlike a DSL connection which only uses a single phone line, it requires the use of a router, with an internal or external CSU/DSU (Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit).
Nevertheless, a T1 connection has its downside in the cost. This can be attributed to the high maintenance and service costs, which includes the requirement of T1 service providers to have a 24/7 customer and technical support. This high cost makes the T1 service primarily available for medium-scale and corporate businesses. However, as the T1 line grow in reliability and popularity, one can expect that future costs will eventually decrease – and for the service to expand to residential users as well.
A common T1 line connection is the Frac-T1 (fractional) which can provide a 384 Kbps, a 512 Kbps, a 768 Kbps or a 1.1 Mbps connection. While cable internet and DSL internet connections can theoretically can reach the same speeds as a T1 line, it’s only good on paper. With a T1 line, line sharing with other subscribers is not necessary because of the unique connection. This means that you can count on the all-work, no-hype benefits of a speedy T1 connection!
