The commandant of the National Guard recently announced that recruitment into the ranks would fall short of target by several thousand recruits. This means that National Guard recruiters will have to double time on their efforts to attract more men.

You may find it hard to believe, but the US Constitution requires the existence of the National Guard in each state. No other branch in the military has that distinction. When natural disasters strike any part of the country, the chief executives usually call out the National Guard to help. And when necessary, the president will deploy National Guard units to combat zones to support regular troops. This underlines the importance of the National Guard recruiter's job.

Perhaps, in order to help the regular National Guard recruiters get more recruits and reduce the shortfall, the National Guard directorate has recently launched a program that makes every soldier a National Guard recruiter. This is actually a referral program where active and retired members of the National Guard are allowed to refer possible recruits to the organization.

If you are eligible to participate, you do not do actual recruitment although you may have some initial conversations with the prospect. When you have somebody in mind, you may inform the Guard of the particulars and contact information. A regular National Guard recruiter will then schedule a visit to the prospect. Be aware though, that the program administrators will not allow you to specify a particular National Guard recruiter to handle the referral. The purpose for that is to preserve the integrity of the program.

If the referral results in an actual recruitment, you will receive a bonus for the effort under the program. In fact, you may also refer a prospect to the regular Army, in which case a US Army recruiter will go and talk to the prospective recruit.
