Domain name registrars, or simply domain registrars, are companies or organizations that sell Internet domain names. Registering your domain name identifies that name with the IP address of a computer which hosts your website, for the duration of the registration.

The cost of registration varies depending on the offer provided by your registrar. Registration is flexible and can be renewed in yearly increments with a ten-year maximum. You will also have to provide information required by the registrar as part of your registration.

Information about the domain name, including the registrant or owner of the domain name, is made publicly available on your registrar’s Whois database. You can use search engines, provided free by some websites, to search the Whois database for domain name availability.

The Domain Name System, or DNS, facilitates human use of the Internet and similar networks by associating an IP address corresponding with a given domain name. A domain name is made up of two or more labels separated by dots, and serves as an effective mnemonic because IP addresses are difficult to remember.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, authorizes domain registrars to provide registration and DNS hosting services to the public. ICANN-accredited registrars are authorized to sell generic Top Level Domains, or gTLDs.

Some domain registrars may have been granted authority by a government to register the two-letter country code Top Level Domains, or ccTLDs, normally reserved for citizens of the corresponding country. The European Union has also created an euTLD that accredits EU registrars to register .eu domains, which are apart from the individual ccTLDs of EU member countries.

Independent domain registrars lack accreditation from ICANN. They are basically registered gTLDs containing a hierarchy within their domain that resembles an official gTLD or ccTLD hierarchy. They may serve as alternatives to the official ccTLD registrars which may have many restrictions.
