( Education )

Individuals who are aspiring to become dental hygienists must receive formal education at dental hygienists schools. Community colleges, dental schools, universities and technical colleges are some of the types of schools you can approach for your education.

All dental hygienist schools in the country have certain qualifications that must be met before you can obtain a dental hygienist education. Most dental hygienist schools will require you to have passing grades in high school subjects such as biology, math, chemistry, psychology and English. Aside from this, a copy of your high school diploma and college entrance exam results must be submitted to these dental hygienist schools. Additionally, some dental hygienist schools also prefer that you complete at least one year college education.

A typical dental hygienist course will require you to attend, dental radiology, pharmacology, pathology and many others. It does not include medical terminology classes, which is irrelevant to the structure of the course.

A typical dental hygienist course lasts for a couple of years. A master’s degree can also be obtained by completing an additional number of year’s worth of university. A state/national licensure exam must be taken in order be allowed to work in the dental profession upon completion of the course. The licensure exam will be a combination of both written and practical examinations. The license will only be valid in one state. Should the dental hygienist wish to practice in another state other than where the license is valid, another licensure test must be taken.

Dental hygienists work in a dental clinic, hospital, nursing home or health clinic. These individuals perform a number of tasks, which include educating patients on the proper oral hygiene, and taking x-rays of teeth. A dental hygienist also takes charge of applying fluorides or fillings, creating a cast of the patient’s teeth and performing office management activities.
