Contact lense is defined as a corrective or cosmetic lense that is placed on the cornea of the eye on top of the iris to aid a person who has vision problems.

A contact lense is a transparent material that is small, thin and round. It is usually soft or flexible but hard contact lenses are also available. It is held in place by the natural tears present between the contact lense and the cornea. A contact lense removes the obstruction on spectacles that affects the line of sight on all sides of the eye resulting to clearer peripheral vision. It can also remove or reduce image distortion caused by wearing of eyeglasses.

Not everyone can order contact lense from the optical shop even if the person has vision problems. You must first consult your ophthalmologist or eye specialist for an eye examination and for contact lense exam. They will also give you directions or instructions on how to properly use them. Cleaning and storing of contact lenses and other hygiene practices are also important and must be strictly followed.

Many prefer to wear contact lenses rather than eye glasses because they are much more convenient. Others however wear them after cataract surgery to have enough vision or to address other eye deformities. Contact lense prices also vary according to the degree of visual impairment. Although there are many cheap contact lense, it is advisable to consult first with your eye doctor before purchasing one.

Some people do not like to wear contact lenses because dusts particles might get trapped behind the lens causing damage and irritation to the cornea. Others say that gases, vapours and chemical splashes may cause more damage to the eye if one is wearing a contact lense.

On the flip side of it, others claim that having a contact lense may even minimize or prevent eye injury because the contact lense prevent foreign substances from entering the eye. However, you must remember that contact lenses are not to be used to protect you eye in your work environment. Protective devices must be worn instead.

Some of the more common visual problems that require the use of contact lenses are myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. In myopia, people can see clearly when they are near the object but not when they are far away from it. Hyperopia on the other hand is the opposite of myopia. People cannot see objects near them but can clearly see objects that are at a distance. In astigmatism, images may either be distorted or severely blurred while in presbyopia which is also known as aging eyes, the eyes take longer to adjust between objects.
