A5 Paper Size

A sheet of A5 paper is measured as 5.83" x 8.27" or 148mm x 210mm. This is half the size of the more widely used A4 sheet and approximately half the size of the American letter-sized sheet. The measurements for the A-, B-, and C-series paper sizes are maintained by the International Standards Organization (ISO).

The A5 sheet is widely used for note-taking or letter- and prescription-writing. A5 filofaxes or organizers are common because of its easy-to-carry size. A5 binders or A5 notebooks are also available and many are only marginally larger than the sheets. There quite a few A5 accessories, including hole punchers, made specifically for filofax or binder purposes.

A5 Envelopes According to the ISO

While the A-series of measurements is for paper size, the ISO's C-series generally indicates envelope size. The C5 envelope measures around 6.38" x 9.00" or 162mm x 229mm. This is just enough to fit a flat, unfolded A5 sheet of paper. The C6 envelope measures 3.19" x 6.38" or 114mm x 162mm. This is the more widely used of the three types of A5 envelope, and it will fit an A5 sheet which has been folded in half. The last A5 envelope is the C6/7 envelope which is rarely used. This envelope will fit an A5 sheet which has been folded into thirds.

A5 Envelopes According to the Japanese

The Kaku 5 envelope measures 7.50" x 9.44" or 190mm x 240mm and may be used to enclose an unfolded A5 sheet. The Kaku 6 envelope is about the equivalent of the ISO C5 envelope. The Kaku 8, measuring 4.69" x 7.75" or 119mm x 197mm, may be used for an A5 sheet folded in half. The You 2 size envelope is the equivalent of the ISO C6 envelope.

A5 Envelopes According to the North Americans

A-10 envelopes (6.00" x 9.50" or 152mm x 241mm) may be used for unfolded A5 sheets, or the size 1 catalogue envelope (6.00" x 9.00" or 152mm x 229 mm) may be used similarly. For halved A5 sheets, none of the standard sizes provide a good fit for the sheet, and you may be better off using one of the more common sizes (i.e. official sizes 9 or 10) if caught in such a situation.

Design and Make of the A5 Envelope

There is no standard for the design, color or material used for the A5 envelope. They may come in almost any of the designs available for other envelope sizes. Characteristics to take note of include the cut of the flap, the type of glue or lack thereof to fasten the flap, the paper consistency, and the color of the paper used. These characteristics define the use of the envelope for professional or personal use.
