PERITONEUM AND ASBESTOS
Peritoneum refers to the tissue that lines and protects the abdominal cavity and the organs that are inside it. The peritoneum acts as a shock absorber, protecting the organs from trauma, and as a lubricant, allowing the organs some freedom of motion while inside the cramped abdominal wall.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is one of the most common types of mesothelioma, and it involves abnormal and excessive growth of the peritoneal tissue.
Cancer can be very manageable when detected very early on. But the problem with cancer is that it manifests symptoms only at the terminal stages, of the disease when treatment will no longer halt the spread or metastasis of the cancer cells. Add to this the fact that mesothelioma symptoms are so generic that they can be attributed to so many other types of illnesses.
LATENT MANIFESTATION
If you have been exposed to asbestos, be wary of mesothelioma symptoms like frequent constipation, abdominal swelling, and loss of appetite. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma generally involve the abdominal area, so if you know you have been exposed to asbestos, have yourself screened for mesothelioma once you feel that something is wrong.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is not an acute illness; it actually has a long latency period. This means that the cancer manifests itself many years after your exposure to asbestos has stopped. This is similar to all other asbestos-related illnesses. You have to be mindful of this because the latency period may give you a false sense of security, leading you to believe that you have no health problems at all.
Nobody knows your body like you do. And with asbestos exposure, vigilance is the key for the early detection of mesothelioma. If peritoneal mesothelioma is discovered before it has spread, you have a better chance of surviving the illness and lead on a long and full life.
