The correct selection of modular desks is important. Modular desks should be of a good ergonomic design, and yet comfortable enough to use for long periods of time each day.

Modular desk systems are suitable for those that have limited office spaces because they can be adapted to fit, are portable and expandable should there be a need to add more modular computer desks.

There are two types of modular desk systems: panel-mounted and freestanding. Panel-mounted means modular desks and other fixtures are mounted onto the wall panels.

Freestanding means that the modular desks are not fixed onto the panel walls, and can easily be moved or rearranged.

The best time to buy modular desks is during the summer as this is said to be the slowest selling season. There are a few points to remember when purchasing modular desk systems:

Good quality modular desks should be well constructed: its drawers must be composed of metal suspension rollers, and open and close easily when it is used at full capacity. The drawers must be able to slide out to its maximum length so that its use is maximized. Look for a modular desk that provides ample space for writing, to place computer equipment and ample shelf space and drawers to place your files.

If the modular desk is composed of wooden drawers, you should examine its bottom and ensure it is also made out of wood, and not a plastic melamine sheet: plastic will not be able to withstand heavy contents.

A good way to tell whether a metal desk is of good quality is to check the weight and durability of its construction. The desk should not have a gap where the drawer and desk meet.

If the modular desk has a laminated finish, the laminate used should be thick and can withstand stains, scratches, watermarks and any chipping. They should be rounded in the corners instead of squared-off.

A keyboard tray or platform should be added to the modular desk if it is 29-30 inches in height to provide added comfort to the user; they should also be equipped with wiring holes so that the computer and electrical wires can be kept neatly and not be hanging at the edge of the desk (there are modular desk systems that allow for the option to conceal electrical wiring).

When purchasing modular desk systems ensure that they come with a warranty of about 5 to 15 years.

You may also look at purchasing used modular office furniture or leasing them to save on costs. There are vendors who can replace any worn out parts and replace damaged surfaces for a lower cost should you decide on the option of leasing or buying used modular office furniture.
