From the relatively new tanzanite gemstone, titanium rings which will never rust or tarnish to hip belly button rings and classic gold jewelry, nothing beats the timeless and exquisite diamond. Diamonds are forever, or so they say. They are a woman's best friend and a lasting symbol of eternal love and devotion.

Consider these little known facts about diamonds. Diamonds take shape between 75 and 120 miles below the surface of the earth and are brought to the surface by way of volcanic eruptions. Almost all the diamonds mined every year are used for industrial purposes with only about a quarter used in jewelry. To produce a single one carat diamond, 250 tons of earth must first be mined. Before a diamond ring is placed on a woman's finger, it would have traveled at least five continents and gone through the hands of many skilled craftsmen.

Viewed as the father of branded fancy cut diamonds, the first radiant diamonds were introduced in 1976 and protected by patent. The radiant diamond is a brilliant square or rectangle-cut diamond with clipped off corners. It has 70 facets – the flat polished surface on a diamond, which add sparkle and fire to their appearance. Radiant diamonds in full brilliance are a combination of two cutting styles – the “step cut” and the “brilliant cut". This gives the distinct appearance of cracked ice – one reason why educated buyers chose radiant diamonds. The radiant diamond cut is similar to the princess cut but has blocked corners like an emerald cut. The radiant diamond cut goes well with fancy colored diamonds because the shape, facet arrangement and proportion intensify its color.

The radiant diamond is dramatic as a stand-alone piece but also looks perfect with side stones. A radiant cut diamond is usually set with special prongs to grip blocked corners securely.

Radiant diamonds are often picked as center stones primarily for diamond rings but are also a good choice for pendants. The best radiant diamonds have a length to width ratio between 1 to 1 and 1.5 to 1. This ratio is determined by rough diamond crystal's original size.

The tradition of giving engagement diamond rings among royalty and the wealthy lives on. Diamonds are a symbol of one's place in society. Often passed on from generation to generation, diamonds with proper care and cleaning retain the same sparkle and shine as they did the day you bought them.
