The modern corporate seal has evolved from the days of ancient English law, when a barrister would mark a document by simply pouring hot wax on a document and pressing his ring into the wax.

Today, corporate seals come in a variety of styles that range from rubber stamps and steel embossers, to self seal envelopes and tamper seals.

What is a Corporate Seal?

Although no longer required in some jurisdictions, a corporate seal is conventionally a part of corporate formalities, along with holding your first meeting, adopting the bylaws, and issuing stock shares.

In several states, a corporate seal is a prerequisite to opening a bank account. Often, your corporate seal is used as a stamp to certify corporate documents as official. Typically, it should include your company name as well as the date and state of incorporation.

Customizing Your Corporate Seal

Through the years, the shape and form of corporate seals have diverged from the more traditional forms. Currently, you have a wide variety of customized designs from which to choose.

The standard seals include rubber stamps and steel embossers. Rubber stamps are basically embossers made of rubber material, whereas steel embossers are dry metal impression seals. Both have the same effect of imprinting your corporate name and date of incorporation into your official documents.

An increasingly popular alternative to these forms are the self seal envelop and the tamper seals. The self seal envelop is a professional-looking envelop pre-printed with your return address and, if you prefer, your corporate logo. Meanwhile, tamper seals, or tamper resistant seals, are designed to break if attempts are made to remove it.

If you’re going for nostalgia, you may also want to try out a wax seal, which takes after the first corporate seal form. Some vendors still offer custom artwork etched in marble for a traditional wax mark.

In contrast, electric embossers offer a modern twist to corporate seals, offering convenience and ease of use.

For a unique custom imprint, several non-standard formats are also available as special orders.
