If you have a loved one or a family member who has been found to be using drugs, the first course of action that you may want to help them take is to get treated. Not everyone with an addiction or a substance abuse problem has to be brought to a drug treatment center for inpatient substance abuse treatment. Some patients may be better off with outpatient therapy wherein they get to talk to a therapist who will help them through their problems.
As long as the person you know still has sufficient control over his or her life, wherein the addiction has not threatened to overtake his or her life, then outpatient therapy is still better than a drug treatment center. Once the patient encounters legal problems because of his or her addiction to harmful substances and drugs then entering a drug treatment center becomes essential. Do not wait for a problem to further worsen if the patient has reached this point. Because so many problems of addiction and substance abuse go untreated, patients may succumb to an overdose or to suicide if there is no assistance.
It is only after outpatient therapy has failed should a patient be brought in for inpatient drug treatment. Addiction treatment centers are primarily seen as a last recourse for addicts who want to recover from their addiction, who have tried other methods and have still not met with any success. When it comes down to it, patients must have a genuine and unwavering commitment to change their lifestyle. Only with this commitment can they be ready to enter a drug treatment center and begin a twelve step program to healing and renewal. Patients need to own up to their problems and take responsibility for their actions before any of this change can be brought about in a drug treatment center. Even if you are off drugs in the drug treatment center, the real test will be staying clean long after you leave, once you have re-entered the real world.
