Drug and alcohol rehab centers are institutions where people dependent on psychoactive substances are treated using psychotherapeutic and/or medical processes. These psychoactive substances are alcohol, street drugs and prescription drugs. To be treated in a rehab center, you may admit yourself voluntarily, or be brought by other people for with or without your consent.

Addiction rehab centers' treatments

Various drug and alcohol rehab centers differ in their modes of treating patients. Yet most use the detoxification method to help patients overcome their substance dependence. Drug and alcohol detox programs have mainly 3 detox models and they are the following:

• Medical detox model – Rehab centers use this model to literally detox you of drug or alcohol which you have been addicted to. You may be treated through this model if you are severely dependent on these substances. This is for the reason that with the regular use of drug or alcohol, your brain has grown to be addicted to it, to the point that if you totally stop using it, you may have withdrawal effects. While some of the drug withdrawal effects include vomiting, severe body pain, tremors, and hallucinations, the withdrawal effects for alcohol are seizures and hyperactivity.
To prevent or reduce these withdrawal effects, rehab centers give you dosages of medicine to get rid of these harmful substances in your body and help you adapt gradually to their absence.

• Rapid detox model – drug and alcohol rehab centers may employ this model on you if you are particularly addicted to opium. While the medical detox model make take day or even weeks, this model last for about 5 to 8 hours. In this process, addiction rehab centers use medication along with general anesthesia, after which they make follow-up medications to help your body cope with the absence of opium.

• Social detox model – If you are only moderately dependent on either drugs or alcohol, rehab centers will most likely use this model for your treatment. Without the use of detox drugs, you may adjust well to the sudden absence of harmful substances by having conversations with other individuals who are in the same situation. Rehab centers may also advise you to avoid communicating with people who are still dependent on these substances as this may hinder possible treatment.
