Polymer fume fever is an acute medical condition brought about by the inhalation of Teflon fumes. Polymer fume fever exhibits symptoms very much similar to the common cold – fever, nausea and chills.

At normal conditions, Teflon exists as a solid, stable material. The problem arises when Teflon is heated above a certain temperature. At this threshold, the chemical components in the non-stick material turn to vapor. These Teflon fumes then in turn cause polymer fume fever.

While polymer fume fever is usually self-limiting and eventually resolves by itself, the real problem is the long-term exposure to Teflon fumes which can cause chronic lung problems. And because Teflon is commonly found in cooking pots and pans, you have to exercise some form of precaution to protect yourself from Teflon fumes and prevent polymer fume fever.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER VENTILATION

Installation of fume hoods in the kitchen is a good protective measure. The presence of fume hoods serves as an exhaust system by which the Teflon fumes are absorbed even before harmful amounts are inhaled by the household. Ductless fume hoods are also an option if you are renovating or just building your house. Ductless fume hoods are exhaust systems integrated into the design of the house and do not take up much physical space.

However, if installing fume hoods is not possible for some reason, a cheap and simple option is to provide adequate ventilation in the kitchen. If you are cooking, remember to open all the windows and doors to allow maximum circulation of air.

It is worth mentioning that ventilation and fume hoods are always good to have in the house. This is true whether you are using Teflon-coated pans or not because toxic vapors and noxious fumes can come from a variety of sources. Installation of fume hoods keeps the ambient air in the house fresh and constantly moving.
