Big distributors, manufacturers and shippers usually know which type of drum they need and which drum handling equipment they will use to move them around. However, if you are a beginner or a small business owner, the options presented to you at first may seem staggering. When purchasing drums and drum handling equipment, you have a lot of things to consider. In most warehouses and distribution centers, drum handling requires lifting, moving, storing and even draining drums. Unfortunately, there is no drum handling equipment available today that can do everything.

The first thing you have to know is what type of materials you are going to put in the drums. If you are transporting water, you may want to go with a plastic drum. Plastic drums are lighter and they do not rust. However, steel drums are more stable and are more suitable to transport dry goods.

There is also a choice between the open and closed-head drum. A closed-head drum is suitable for water or other liquid products. Open-head drums can also be used for liquid products, but these are usually reserved for dry goods. The open-head drum is more convenient as you can open and close the container by turning a bolt ring or a latch.

It is also very important to determine the shape of the fixture on the drum as the shape determines the type of drum handling equipment that you need to use. A different tool is used for round-head fixtures and hex-head fixtures for drum handling. You cannot interchange them as it would damage your drums.

When transporting your drums, you would need accessories in additional to your drum handling equipment. You may need drum dollies and drum lifters. It would really depend on the type of product you transport and you business processes.
