Falls Church prehistoric era consists of thousands of years where Native Americans inhabited the area that is now Falls Church city. This prehistoric footpath is still evident in Fall Church’s modern day Broad Street and Great Falls Street. However, the Big Chimneys house on Annandale Road was not constructed until 1699 and so it is generally accepted that the city of Falls Church was founded in 1699.
The city takes its name from a Truro Parish built be a larger parish centered in Quantico in 1734. The Truro Parish was constructed along the main road going to Great Falls on the Potomac and thus became known as “The Falls Church”. The church building was replaced thirty-five years later by the present day brick church. And while it is affiliated with the anglican communion network today, the church remains a part of the episcopal church.
The historic Falls Church has also seen the ravages of American civil war with it being the first city to be aerially bombarded during the war. Afterwhich, Falls Church transformed into a sleepy rural community until 1875, when it was given township status. Later on in 1948, Falls Church finally became an independent city mainly to be able to control its schooling system.
Years later, in early 1960s, Fall Church city sold a square mile of its territory to neighboring Fairfax county for the reason that it is largely populated by the “undesirables” consisting of Native and African Americans, Asians and Latinos.
Today, its rich history and its beach draw substantial amount of tourists and vacationers every year making Virginia one of the most sought after destinations.
