You may be among those who resist the appeal and simplicity of credit card transactions for online purchases due to security reasons. To address this kind of concern, Amercian Express makes secure payments available on the Internet via their smart chip private payments system.

Amercian Express offers a credit card (called Blue card) with smart card technology that uses built-in smart chip for Internet security. This built-in computer microchip on the card stores a certificate of authenticity that helps to provide added security when you make online purchases using your personal computer (PC).

You will not use your actual credit card number to make a purchase as you are given a unique, temporary card number and expiration date to enter that provides added protection from Internet fraud. The temporary card number usually expires within 30 to 67 days of issue date to reduce the possibility of the number being stolen.

American Express Blue card is used with a corresponding card reader. You swipe your Amercian Express card through a special reader (or scanner) attached to your PC. After you enter your personal identification number (PIN), the digital certificate is read, and the necessary information to complete the purchase is transmitted securely to the private payments system.

There are three varieties of smart chip readers: a serial reader, a universal serial bus (USB) reader, and a keyboard reader. The serial and USB readers are stand-alone peripheral devices that read your smart chip. The keyboard reader functions as both a standard keyboard for your PC and as a reader for your smart chip. Amercian Express will provide you with one free stand-alone reader. If you want to have additional readers, you can get them for a fee.

Your American Express Blue card also contains the familiar magnetic strip so you can use it like an ordinary credit card.
