Dish Network Sattelite Facilities Offer More Than Video Fare

The Dish Television network is a low-cost provider of good quality digital television programming. Although its main customer base is in the US, Dish satellite TV is available to many customers worldwide. Its ability to provide television programming is anchored on the Dish Network sattelite fleet. But aside from video services, the Dish Network sattelite facilities enable the company to offer other services and compete in the bigger communications market.

The first Dish Network sattelite began operating in 1995, after its successful launch to orbital slot 119 degrees west longitude. The company acquired more orbital slots launched several more satellites in quick succession until the last one in 2006. Taken together, the Dish Network sattelite fleet includes ten owned satellites and four leased units.

The company deployed its satellite fleet with wide enough spacing between individual units and sufficient frequency allocations. This permits Dish Network satellite TV systems to deliver high-powered transmissions (usually in the range of 12 gigahertz). As a consequence, Dish cable TV offers subscribers more than 500 channels of digital video and CD-quality audio services, with television programming that includes foreign-language broadcasts.

To ensure that delivery of programming and other communications services remain in high quality, the company has also adopted fiber optic technology and installed a fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) network. This high-velocity, high-bandwidth network is present in over 168 cities in the country. Fiber technology has allowed Dish cable TV to offer streaming video, IP streaming, and video-on-demand options to subscribers.

The infrastructure also enables Dish TV communications facilities to provide data services to subscribers. As the regulatory distinctions between telephone services and broadcasting services slowly dissolve, satellite providers can also offer broadband Internet access to their subscribers. Where before only cable and satellite companies were in direct competition, now they are competing in the video, data and voice services market with telephone companies.
