Projection TVs have become popular recently as home entertainment, simply because they have the ability to bring out larger images of the program or video you are watching. Having a projection TV is like watching a full-screen movie right in the comfort of your own home.
Projection TVs Compared to Standard CRT TV
Regular-sized color TV are of the cathode ray tube or CRT type which uses 3 electron beams to fire images onto a screen. What you see on your CRT TV screen is exactly the images that the beams have created, or what is known as a direct-view display.
While CRT TVs can give sharp images and good picture quality, these images are limited in size to the glass screen where they are projected. While this limited image size is fine for close-up viewing in a small area, it may not be enough to enjoy sci-fi or action movies that contain very intricate graphics. With a maximum screen width of only 40 inches, standard CRT TVs may also limit the viewing pleasure in the case of larger audiences such as conferences or parties.
Large-screen CRT TVs are also heavy and cumbersome to move around.
Projection TVs on the other hand come in different forms. Some are of the front-view type which use a projector and separate screen and works just like a regular movie theater. The rear-view types look a lot like regular TVs where the projector is inside the TV set.
Projection TVs Compared to Plasma TVs
The plasma TV is another alternative for people who prefer large-screen TV. The flat TV screen is only a few inches thick and can project a large image of the program. While ideal for smaller spaces, plasma TVs have a burn-in tendency, that is, images that stay too long on the screen can permanently sear into the plasma. Moreover, plasma TVs are more expensive than many projection TVs, and you need to install special plasma TV mounts.
Where to Acquire Projection TVs
Numerous sites as well as appliance stores sell projection TVs at close to two thousand dollars each.
If you need to use a projection TV for only a short period of time, as in a conference or special occasion, you can also rent a projection TV at the same online sites that provide TV and plasma rentals. Rental cost is about one hundred to several hundred dollars daily, so you should decide carefully whether it is more feasible to buy or rent the unit.
