There are many available types of treatments for prostate cancer nowadays. The type of cure you receive will largely depend on your health, and the size and location of the tumor. For people with slow growing tumor in the prostate, the doctor would usually just require regular check ups. No active treatment will be given unless new symptoms appear, such as blood in the urine and painful urination.

Most treatments for prostate cancer vary from invasive to non-invasive means. Sometimes, patients even have to undergo several prostate treatments to help remedy the disease. Timing is very important in the successful treatment of prostate cancer, just as in other forms of cancers. The earlier the tumor is detected, the better the chances of surviving.

Invasive treatments for prostate cancer

Radical prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate cancer through surgery. This type of procedure is advisable only if the cancer has not spread to areas other than the prostate. In this type of prostate treatment, the surgeon removes the whole gland and even the nearby tissues to prevent the further spread of the cancer.

Cryosurgery, which is also one of the invasive prostate cancer treatment options, entails the use of liquid nitrogen to kill or freeze cancer cells in the prostate.

The brachytherapy involves the implantation of tiny grain-like radioactive seeds into the prostate glands. The main objective of this prostate treatment is to wipe out cancer cells while preserving the healthy cells surrounding the prostate gland.

Non-invasive treatments for prostate cancer

Hormone treatment for prostate cancer is mostly used for patients whose cancer has returned or spread after previous medications. This method involves the reduction of the patient’s testosterone hormone level using drugs that help lessen production of testosterone by the testicles.

In radiation treatment for prostate cancer, high-energy subatomic particles and x-rays are used to eradicate cancer cells. Radiation-emitting machines are directed toward the patient’s prostate to help shrink, or even eradicate, cancer cells.
