The name Eames has been associated with fine quality office and home furniture in ultra-modern functional styles. Furniture and interior designing couple Charles and Ray Eames have identified the need for affordable yet high-quality furniture which could serve a wide variety of uses. Known for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture and furniture design, the Eameses developed various innovative styles using cost-effective manufacturing methods.
In 1946, they developed the Eames chairs which use molded plywood, a trick they learned during their commission with the US Navy to produce splints and stretchers. The molded plywood Eames chair has been lauded as "the chair of the century". Eames office chairs allow the body to move more easily with their tilt-swivel mechanisms, vinyl cushioning, and adjustable seat heights. The Eames lounger and ottoman were developed in 1956 as a birthday present for their filmaker friend Billy Wilder, and its quality leather and bentwood veneer has since become part of their most enduring furniture designs.
The Eameses were also into other projects such as designing tandem sling seats for Dulles and O'Hare airports, and creating a huge 7-screen slide show for the Moscow World's Fair in 1959. Other notable projects include designing and building their own signature home in Pacific Palisades, and various museum exhibits.
One of their most popular products is the office table. Designed and developed in 1964, the Eames table features a single semented base which could support table tops of various lengths, widths and shapes. An Eames table top is about one inch thick and comes in 36 sizes and 4 basic shapes - oval, round, square and rectangular. You can choose from 22 laminates, 9 veneers and vinyl or veneer edges.
The strength and versatility of this lean simple base design makes it possible to produce Eames tables in a wide variety of sizes and styles. The Eames table is not only beautiful and functional but also long-lasting. The lean and modern look and quiet sophistication is still widely popular today as it was when it was first developed 40 years ago.
What's best, the Eames table as well as other Eames furniture are sold at very affordable prices, which means high value given their versatility and long wearability.
Today the Eames office is operated by the late couple's only daughter Lucia and one of her sons. The Eames furniture is produced by Herman Miller Inc. in the USA and by Vitra International in Europe. The latter is also famous for its Vitra miniature furniture which is especially made to fit small spaces.
