The Delano Hotel: Cool Chic In A Hot Spot

The Delano Hotel, located in the center of South Beach, can sometimes appear as a surrealist urban resort. When you enter the Delano Hotel, you'll get the feeling that you have passed a threshold into a new environment.

Going to the Delano Hotel lobby, you pass through a fenced garden path leading to slightly raised steps and a curtained patio. Suddenly white translucent curtains of sheer fabric drop from the rafters to the floor. The progression of secluded pathways and luxurious gateways form the dividing line between the outside world and the oasis within.

The Delano Hotel's indoor/outdoor lobby is apparently inspired by sidewalk cafes in a public square, which makes it ideal for people watching or maybe catching a glimpse of the celebrities that come as guests. But despite all the chic, Delano Hotel in Miami Beach can be a comfortable, homey place to stay. Guests seldom leave during the day.

There are 238 guest rooms, including suites, lofts and bungalows. Furniture in the rooms is custom-designed. The colors are pale gray and white; the only color in the room when you come in is a green apple ensconced in its own little shelf by the door. The rooms may be several degrees short of the luxury and style apparent in the public areas; the bathrooms are smaller than you would expect.

The bungalows may be better, particularly if you are in for an extended stay. You'll have a large sitting room on the first floor, and a bedroom and bath on the second floor. The bungalows have a private entrance on the street side of the hotel. This would be nice for a family, and the Delano Hotel's owner originally envisioned the hotel as a family resort. But room prices have gone up, beyond the average-income family's reach.
