DLP (Digital Light Processing) bulbs are used in DLP projection TVs and DLP projectors to illuminate video images. DLP bulbs project a white light onto a projector’s color wheel, which bounces the light off to digital micro mirrors found inside a projector. The image is then transferred to the projector’s lens and delivered onto the projector screen.
DLP bulbs differ from LCD bulbs because LCD bulbs can only project spreadsheets and other types of information that do not require motion.
DLP bulbs are measured according to the brightness that the bulb can produce, or what is also known as lumens: the higher the lumens that your projector requires, the larger the audience and room that the unit can project onto. It is also worthwhile to note that projectors and television units using DLP bulbs with higher lumens tend to be larger in size and be heavier.
DLP bulbs are quite expensive to purchase, and the cost of the lamp will depend on its type and brand, aside from the amount of brightness it produces. The maximum amount of time that you can use DLP bulbs will depend on how often you use your DLP projector or television; however, on average, DLP bulbs can be used for a couple of thousand of hours.
DLP bulbs that need replacing will normally project a darker image than normal. When it is time to replace your DLP bulb it is strongly recommended that you make your purchase in a retail store. Ordering online is not practical as DLP bulbs are fragile, and have the tendency to break before it reaches you when shipped or mailed.
You can replace DLP bulbs yourself. All you would normally require is your bulb and a screwdriver to open the casing of a projector or TV, pulling out and installing the new bulb.
