When you want big-screen viewing without the bulk or weight of a big direct-view TV set, you can check out projection TVs, particularly DLP projection TVs. Projection TVs are of two main types:

Rear-Projection Sets

Like the analog big-screen TVs of the 1980s, these sets have their mechanisms behind the screen. Using a special lens, these sets shine color-separated images onto a mirror which bounces them onto the back of the viewing screen. They sell for half the price of same-size direct-view sets, but are not as bright. They tolerate ambient room light better than front projectors, thus are more suitable for living rooms. But pictures viewed from side angles are not too good.

Front-Projection Sets

These are similar to movie theater setups, where you have a projector and a screen. These types give best results in home theaters and similarly darkened rooms. Front projection models do not include speakers or a TV tuner; these are supplied separately.

Whether you use rear- or front-projection sets, you will find there are four imaging technologies to choose from: those that use CRT (cathode ray tubes); LCD (liquid crystal display) which uses LCD projector bulbs; LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon); or, DLP (digital light processing) which uses DLP bulbs.

DLP projection TVs use a DLP chip, where you have optical semiconductors controlling the movements of up to two million tiny mirrors (each only one-fifth as wide as a human hair), one mirror to a pixel, tilting the mirrors toward or away from the lens path. The DLP chips work with digital signals (video or graphic), DLP bulbs as sources of light, and projection lenses to project the image to the screen. This technology offers richer blacks and more color gradations than other technologies.

DLP projection TVs are available in the cheaper rear-projection types or in the more recent, more expensive front-projection models.
