ALWAYS ONLINE

Desktop security refers to the various programs and applications that you can use to make your computer more secure and protected from malicious hackers and applications while you are surfing the net.

The advent of broadband Internet access has made our computer desktops more vulnerable and open to attacks, thus needing better desktop security. Broadband provides an always-online status wherein you have automatic Internet access as soon as you turn on the computer. Being online all the time leaves your system an open target to programs meant to do your computer harm.

Desktop security can mean anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that can clean your system of these damaging programs and at the same time provide real time protection against them as well. Using desktop security software can be a very effective defense especially when you are diligent enough to run security checks on a regular basis.

ONE STEP AHEAD

Because newer and more powerful malicious programs are being concocted by hackers and programmers on a daily basis, you have to be very vigilant and download desktop security software updates as soon as they are available. Remember that hackers are always one step ahead of your desktop security program as they try to create and design programs that can trick or bypass your desktop security system.

Desktop security is especially important when you perform business transactions over the Internet on a regular basis. A good argument for desktop security is- when you order something online and you type in the payment information, some hackers can create a program to trace your payment information. After they have seen your card information, these hackers can then use the card to make their own purchases. You have no knowledge of this happening until you see your next month’s credit card bill indicating purchases you have never made.

While this scenario has happened before, nowadays it is a rare occurrence as websites have been doing transactions over more secure servers where the level of encryption is very difficult to crack. But this is not a reason to be complacent. When it comes to desktop security, a little bit of paranoia always helps.
