During the procedure, a thin circular flap is created in your cornea using either an instrument called microkeratome or laser. Folding the flap back, the surgeon then ablates or removes some corneal tissue using an excimer laser. The removal of tiny bits of tissue from your cornea reshapes it in such a way that light is focused better into your eye and retina resulting in clearer vision. The area where the corneal tissue was ablated will be covered once the flap is laid back in place.

This new eye surgery can work for both nearsighted and farsighted. With the nearsighted, the cornea that is too steep cornea is flattened and for the farsighted, the cornea is made steeper. With astigmatism, on the other hand, a more normal shape is desired for the irregular cornea.

While you may think LASIK is the only kind of refractive surgery, there are many types of new eye surgery procedures available for you to choose from. Your choices range from a number of excimer laser procedures or those that use laser to reshape your cornea and several non-excimer laser procedures or those that do not use laser for refraction but inserts artificial lenses into you eye then reshapes it using low heat radio wave energy.
