Staying at high altitude is very difficult. Oxygen at high altitudes is very thin and air pressure is low, making you at risk for hypoxia. Hypoxia is lack of oxygen to the brain and is quite deadly. So before trying conquer the highest peak, you should do some altitude training first.

Altitude training can be done in two ways. One is by actually living at high altitudes. Another is somewhat artificial, by using altitude tents or altitude chambers. Either way, you'll reap the benefits.

Altitude tents and altitude chambers work by modifying the air pressure within its confines. Generators would be attached to the device to modify quality of air in it. You do have to get used to the noise from the generators though. Modifying the oxygen level would make your body work just as if you were really at high altitude. This will make your body get used to the feeling of being in low pressure.

Of course, training at high altitude would always be better. You might want to get some gear though - like an altimeter watch and gps altimeter. These gadgets would always make you aware of your altitude, and will ensure that you don't get lost.

Altitude training will definitely increase your endurance. It is very difficult to work with the same intensity as when you're at sea level though. Your body is concentrating more on getting oxygen to your brain. However, your muscles get used to working with less oxygen so that when you compete at sea level, you have the advantage over those who did not go through altitude training. It will also give you a better chance of avoiding hypoxia when you do try to conquer the highest peak.

There are people though, who have ethical concerns with altitude training. They even say it's comparable to doping. But proponents of altitude training counter back that that's like banning high altitude residents from competing.

In the end, going on altitude training is a personal choice.
