We are all clock people. Everything we do moves according to the passage and cadence of time. In work especially, the pay we receive is determined by the actual hours we put in. That is why time keeping systems are essential to any company running a decent workforce.

What are time keeping systems? Also known as time clock systems, these are basically machines that capture the time you came in for work and the time you went out. It determines whether you arrived on time and stayed for the duration of the required working hours. These machines function not only as timekeeping systems but attendance systems as well.

THE GOOD ‘OL BUNDY

In the past, the most popular among time and attendance systems was the Bundy clock. Time card systems like this are basically clocks with a slot where you insert your time card. The time you came in is printed on to the time card; you do the same once you leave the office. The problem with this time keeping system is that you can have a friend insert your time card for you if you will be late or absent - the clock cannot know if it was you or somebody else who inserted your card. You get paid for the entire day even if you were absent or late for several hours.

Companies have known about this for a long time that is why new types of time and attendance systems have replaced the time card systems. A very popular type is the biometric time system. Instead of a time card, this modern time keeping system uses a scanner for fingerprints. The scanner recognizes the fingerprint on its database and registers the time you came in and out of the office.

WORKFORCE PRODUCTIVITY

It still makes use of the principle behind the Bundy clock, but biometric time system is fool-proof in the sense that it will tag a fingerprint to one employee only; no more swiping for a friend in this age of high-tech time and attendance systems.

More and more, companies are harnessing the power of technology to ensure productivity in the workplace through time keeping systems. After all, the success of a business is due largely to the output of its workers. And a successful company benefits its employees as well.

And timekeeping systems provides us with the means to do just that.
