Your domain name is your Internet identity. It is the channel through which the public will find your online business. But before you can do online business through the use of your domain name, you have to register a name with an accredited domain name registrar.

There are steps you have to follow before you can successfully register your domain name. First, you have to select and buy an available domain name. Second, you must arrange for the configuration of your domain name such that it will refer to the appropriate web site.

Selection and Purchase of a Domain Name

To register a name, you must ascertain that your preferred domain name has not been taken by checking its availability on a registrar’s Web site. Many domain names in the .com top-level domain (TLD) are already purchased. If your preferred domain name is not available at one top-level domain, you may try the same name at any of the other top-level domain suffixes, such as .net, .org, .info, and the like.

However, if you insist on the .com top-level domain, try inserting hyphens at key points to generate a name closely resembling your preference. Remember that spaces, apostrophes, exclamation marks and underscores are not allowed in domain names. You must make sure that your domain name has a maximum length of 63 characters including the dot and the three or more characters of top-level domain.

If your preferred domain name is available, you can now register your domain name. Follow the instructions on the Web registrar’s site to guide you through a checkout process, where you specify how long you want to register a name (usually between one and ten years) and provide your credit card number for payment.

Configuration of the Domain Name

As part of the registration process, you have to furnish the address of the name servers that your domain name will point to. If you do not know the address, ask your web hosting company. You will be given two addresses as your primary and secondary name server address.

You should not be surprised if after you register your domain name you still can’t access your new Web address. There can be a maximum three-day delay after you register a name before it points to the appropriate Web server.

After this short wait, your Web business cyber address will be ready to welcome your online visitors.
