Natural cork flooring has proven to be a beautiful, durable, long-lasting product. Improved technology has increased the durability and ease of cork flooring maintenance. You can make cork floors from one-by-three-foot planks, consisting of three layers, and from square cork floor tiles.
You can install cork tile flooring in virtually any room of your house or office. If you are seeking to reduce the noise level in a room, like the family room, cork tile flooring will be a big help. Even in heavy traffic areas like the foyer, cork flooring is a reliable product to use. If it is properly installed and cared for, natural cork flooring will not rot or collect fungus when it gets wet or dirty, and it is easy to maintain.
Cork floor tiles are made from pure ground cork particles held together by a synthetic resin binder. Most popular sizes are 9 by 9 or 12 by 12 inch squares, in 3/16 inch thickness, although some other thicknesses are also available. In terms of cost, cork tile flooring will generally fall somewhere between rubber and vinyl, for similar thicknesses. The lowest cost cork tile flooring uses cork with unfinished surfaces. The mid-priced cork floor product has factory-applied wax-, lacquer-, or resin-finished surface. Cork floor tile with a factory-applied clear plastic (urethane) film is the most expensive.
Cork tile flooring must become acclimated before installation. You remove the cork from the wrapping and place the tiles in the room where you plan to install them for at least 72 hours.
You must apply a sub-floor primer before installing cork tile flooring. After making sure it is completely dry, apply the adhesive coat in areas of fifty square feet at a time. The coat will dry in half an hour, and then you must apply the cork floor tiles within one hour of adhesive application.
