Medical assistant schools are widely found everywhere. A medical assistant course can take you as little as a year to complete in order to get a diploma. You can also obtain an associate’s degree, but will take you a slightly longer time to complete. Should you choose to specialize in one field of medicine, medical assistant schools can provide you with further education on the field of medicine of your choice. The branches of medicine can include internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiovascular medicine, ophthalmology and dental medicine. Each branch of medicine have specific ways of treatments that need to be learned, and associate degrees in any of these branches of medicine can be an advantage in your job search.

The typical curriculum of medical assistant schools can include education on physiology and anatomy, medical terms, law and ethics of medicine, basic psychology, the fundamentals of administrative and clinical procedures. Medical assistant schools will also ask you to complete a certain number of job study hours in a hospital, medical practice or in a health care setting that provides ambulatory services.

Upon the completion of a medical assistant course, a medical assistant, also known as a medical administrative assistant will be able to work in a doctor’s office, a hospital or a medical center. A medical assistant will perform a variety of jobs including answering phone calls, maintaining a doctor’s appointment schedule, taking a patient’s weight, blood pressure and pulse. A medical assistant can also be left in charge of maintaining medical records of patients, provide assistance during routine medical examinations and perform basic accounting. Most medical assistants will also be tasked to collect lab results, order lab and medical supplies, administer any medications as advised by the doctor, remove a patient’s sutures and change the dressing of wounds. Performing any administrative and clinical tasks are also amongst the responsibilities of a medical assistant. Other medical assistants may also be task to do diagnostic screening tests on patients and be able to explain any medical procedures that are to be performed on patients.
