Cork floors are fabricated from the outer layer of the bark of oak trees, which are harvested by hand. The raw materials that are gathered are first washed, boiled and its outer layer removed. The strips that remain are mixed with a binding solution, shaped into tiles and baked.
Cork floors resist static electricity, hot and cold temperatures. Cork floors absorb sounds, so that no footsteps or noise is heard from any falling objects.
People that have respiratory allergies are known to benefit from using cork floors. This is because cork floors are manufactured in a honeycomb fashion making it resistant to any dust, pollen particles, mold and mildew.
Cork floor tiles come in two types. There are cork floor tiles that are glued down to a surface and are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. These glued down tiles are installed easily on top of a floor surface instantly. The second type of cork flooring is known as floating cork flooring. These cork floor tiles are like laminated wood planks used on floors. These cork floor tiles have a MDF fiberboard installed in between two layers of cork base materials. Floating cork flooring is also coated with a type of polyurethane material. It is installed in the same way as material used on wall laminated floors.
A dry or wet mop cleans cork floors, while a liquid solvent wax can be used to make it appear glossy. Electric buffing with steel wool discs also clean any stubborn dirt that is caught. Lamb wool pads are used after buffing to take away any excess dirt.
Cork floor tiles come in a variety of colors from green, beige, black, brown and even red. These floor tiles are suitable to use in kitchens, bathrooms and on walls, ceilings, baseboards and moldings.
