Drugs for hypertension have been proven to manage and control high blood pressure and help prevent possible heart attack and strokes as secondary to the existing primary hypertension.

DILATORS AND DIURETICS

There are several types of drugs for hypertension. The first type acts as a dilator, making the blood vessels dilate or increase in diameter. These types of hypertension medications are called vasodilators. These drugs act only on the blood vessels, when these vasodilators increase the diameter, the blood flowing within the blood vessels have more room to move, and thus the flow happens more smoothly. Vasodilators are of two types, the direct acting vasodilators and the ACE inhibitors.

Another type of drugs for hypertension is the diuretics. These hypertension medications encourage urination, thereby decreasing the body’s total blood volume. Diuretics, while very potent in decreasing hypertension because it acts directly on the blood volume circulating inside the body, should be used with extreme caution. These types of drugs for hypertension can cause dehydration when not used properly. Usually, diuretics are only used when the high blood pressure needs to be lowered immediately. They are not ideal for everyday blood pressure management.

THE BEST DRUG

The third general type of drugs for hypertension act directly on the CNS or central nervous system. However because these drugs act directly on the brain and nervous system, the use of these drugs can cause dizziness, vomiting, depression, and other similar side effects.

If you have chronic blood pressure, you may have to take any of these drugs for hypertension to help keep your pressure within safe limits. However, you should not depend on these medications for your health. While there is no cure for blood pressure, it is highly manageable. The best way to combat high blood pressure is to keep a healthy diet, active lifestyle, and a happy, positive outlook in life.
