When your projector image begins to grow dimmer, you know that lamp changing is in the offing. Depending on the projector model, you may be able to check the number of hours slide projector lamps have been in use.

Projector bulbs are no different from other light bulbs; they have an expected lamp life albeit longer and normally range up to a few thousand hours. Majority of slide projector lamps will reach the specified lamp life although some may fail sooner.

The probability of getting your slide projector lamps to last longer is dependent on usage and how you care for them. Don’t overuse. Projector bulbs that are used no longer than three to five hours a day in clean and relatively dust-free surroundings are more likely to last through their entire specified lamp life than those that operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Don’t allow slide projector bulbs to get overheated. Make sure that you give projector bulbs enough time to cool off when you turn your projector off. You may also opt to set your projector to economy mode to lengthen the lamp’s life.

When replacing a projector bulb, never touch the actual bulb. The oil on your fingers may transfer to the bulb which can cause the bulb to explode or burn out faster once it gets heated. Always have a cloth or tissue to hold the bulb with when installing it in the projector.

Slide projector bulbs can be halogen or metal halide. The image emitted by halogen lamps is more yellowish compared to the whitish image of metal halide. A halogen lamp burns at a constant rate throughout its lamp life while metal halide grows dimmer with time. The price of metal halide can be four times more the price of halogen. While halogen lamps are much cheaper though, their lamp life is also much shorter than metal halide ones and you may find yourself replacing your slide projector lamps more often which may end up being more expensive than using metal halide lamps.

The product warranty for projector bulbs can be from two to three months, depending on the manufacturer. It is best to buy an extra bulb when you purchase your projector in case of emergency. Make sure to check out several suppliers and manufacturers before deciding on which one to procure.
