Type 1 asbestos surveys, also known as a location and assessment survey is conducted to find the presence and the amount of asbestos containing materials in a building, and to evaluate its condition. This type of survey is performed when no samples are taken from the site, but samples will only be taken at a later date.

Type 2 asbestos surveys, also known as a standard sampling, identification and assessment survey is done for the same reasons as a type 1 survey; however, with this type of survey, samples are taken and evaluated to confirm whether suspected materials contain asbestos. Samples can be taken at the same time the asbestos material is discovered and found.

The last type of asbestos survey is a type 3 survey, also known as a full-access sampling and identification survey is a more thorough survey whose purpose is to locate all materials containing asbestos including the hard to reach areas in a building. A survey is done to identify the amount of asbestos in a given area, to analyze and test it and to remove it prior to a building demolition or building reconstruction.
