You may have opened your inbox to check your email at the beginning of your workday anticipating congratulations for a job well done for a presentation you did yesterday. You log in and you see hundreds of emails selling, phishing or just plain clogging your inbox and you are unable to locate the emails from people you know and that are very important in nature.

This has happened to a lot of people. Spam is fast becoming the way of life. From selling stuff, to sending jokes, to saying you won a major contest. It may seem hopeless, but there are a few things you can do to block spam.

First cardinal rule, never, ever reply to any spam mail you receive. It basically confirms that your email works and you will become a target for more. The advertisers who send spam have no way of knowing if you actually receive or even read the stuff that they send. It will be confirmed once you respond. In terms of HTML spam messages, make sure you disable your preview pane to prevent opening spam messages.

Second, there is absolutely no harm in having multiple addresses, this is in ingenious way to block spam. Most of the email addresses available today are free. So take advantage of it. Keep one relatively private. Give it only to your friends, family or business colleagues. You can use your other email addresses to subscribe to websites therefore keeping your relatively private email address spam free.

Third, use email spam blockers. There is a lot of spam blocker software available in the market today. These help you minimize, if not fully eradicate, the spam in your inbox.

And lastly, if you are unsuccessful in all counts and your inbox just keeps filling up with spam email everyday, you do not really have to block spam. Just start over. Create a new email address and be cautious as to who you give it to.
