Spam is an epidemic rampant on the internet, on your email, on your website. A lot of active users of the internet as well as business owners with an online presence receive hundreds, if not thousands of these junk emails everyday making it difficult to distinguish the real emails from spam. A lot of companies and programmers now offer either paid and free spam blockers or what they call anti spam software to keep out the trash in your inbox.

There are several kinds of anti spam software. The first one is an email plug-in, commonly called an antispam filter. This software still allows you to download all your emails from your server. The filters configured in the software will take effect after download.

Second type of anti spam software is the antispam filter that is installed server-side. This antispam service offered by most ISPs and other online email servers scans email for certain key words, triggers, key phrases and aggressive writing styles. While this antispam program is effective, spammers have learned to fool these kinds of software. Their emails go through the cracks while some legitimate emails are blocked by the program. An example of this is antispam for Exchange.

The last type of antispam software is the standalone program. This kind of antispam filter constantly runs in the background, communicating with your email server several times an hour to check the mailbox in your email server. The email it detects as spam is then deleted from the server. This kind of antispam filter may take up a lot of space and resources on your computer.

Do not publish your email on online bulletin boards, chat rooms and the like. Do not even post your private and personal email on your website. Avoid opening emails from people or sources you don’t know. You will minimize the junk email that you find in your inbox everyday just by being cautious.
